Interior Painting: How to Choose the Right Color for Your Bloomington Home

William Remodeling·April 21, 2025

After painting thousands of rooms across Bloomington and McLean County, we've seen what works and what leads to an expensive re-do. Here's what we tell every customer before we open a can.

  • Illinois Light Changes Everything
  • Central Illinois gets bright summers and grey winters. A color that looks warm and creamy in June can look dingy and yellow in February. Always test your samples in the actual room, at different times of day, before committing.
  • Understand Undertones
  • Every white has an undertone — blue, green, pink, or yellow. "Simply White" by Benjamin Moore reads very differently than "White Dove" in the same room. Hold your sample next to your trim, flooring, and furniture before deciding.
  • The Most Common Mistake We Fix
  • Painting the ceiling and walls the same color. It feels modern in theory but often makes rooms feel smaller and flatter. Keep ceilings at least one shade lighter than the walls.
  • Our Most-Requested Colors in Bloomington
  • Benjamin Moore "Chantilly Lace" for bright, clean whites
  • Sherwin-Williams "Agreeable Gray" for flexible neutral living rooms
  • Benjamin Moore "Hale Navy" for accent walls and front doors
  • Sherwin-Williams "Accessible Beige" for warm, whole-home neutrals
  • What Good Prep Looks Like
  • We sand, fill every nail hole and crack, caulk all trim gaps, and prime before the topcoat touches the wall. The paint is the easy part — prep is the job. A properly prepped surface means your paint job looks good for years, not months.
